Nicole's Pick #2

Splash Math
This app is designed to support math skills for Grades 1-4.  For this week, I looked at the Splash Math for Grade One.  Questions are asked on skills appropriate for its grade level.  For each level, 10 questions are asked and they vary in their questioning.  For example, there is multiple choice, fill in the blank, and drag the correct answer into the appropriate blank.   In the free version, there are two categories: numbers and comparisons and place value.
In these categories, some questions asked are the number before, the number in between two numbers, place value using cubes, greater than, less than, equal to, and sets of objects which are grouped.  Base 10 blocks are also used for numbers and the user must count the blocks and identify the correct number.  The user also has to identify numbers in the tens place and ones place.  Points are given for each correct score.
I like this app for students working on place value and number sense.   The questions are appropriate for this grade level.  The graphics are great- you have little sea creatures that encourage and cheer you on.  In the top left corner, your progress is shown, which allows you to know how many you have scored correctly and how many are left.  In the top right, your overall score is shown.  In the middle, the user’s overall progress in the game is shown.  Not only is this app great for students working on their own, it is also group for both small groups and the class as a whole group.  I have used it this week during my mental math activities and my students loved it.  I had only planned to do one level and we ended up completing four!  The only disadvantage to this free app is that the user is limited to these two math strands.  By purchasing the app for $4.99, the user has access to 13 chapters (rather than 2 in the free version), which includes work with number operations, geometry data and graphing and measurement.  In my own opinion, this app is worth the purchase price!
Overall, an excellent app for anyone working on these mathematical concepts!

  1. This app sounds great Nicole. I do some in-class support in these grade levels and can see this app being very useful! I agree, by the sounds of it 4.99 is a great deal but will try the free version first.
